Traditional Moorish caf\u00e9s line the shaded squares where old men while away the hours over dominoes, in that slow, dreamy atmosphere so wonderfully, unmistakably Djerbian.<\/p>

Standing directly beside the port of Houmt Souk, Fort Ghazi Mustapha \u2014 also known as Borj El Kebir, meaning the Great Fort \u2014 is one of the most historically charged monuments in the entire Mediterranean. Its origins date back to the 15th century, when it was built under the Hafsid dynasty to defend the island against seaborne invasions.<\/p>

One of the most dramatic chapters in its history unfolded in 1560, when Spanish forces, overwhelmed by the Ottoman army led by the feared corsair Dragut, sought refuge within its walls after a crushing defeat at sea. Trapped and outmatched, they were slaughtered in what remains one of the bloodiest episodes in the island's history \u2014 between 5,000 and 6,000 defenders lost their lives in the assault.<\/p>

In the wake of his victory, Dragut ordered the construction of a tower of skulls \u2014 the Borj er-Rous \u2014 built from the bones of the fallen soldiers. A macabre symbol of power, it was designed to strike fear into enemies and assert Ottoman dominance over the region. This grim monument stood until 1848, when it was torn down and replaced by a 9-metre obelisk that stands to this day in memory of that tragic episode.<\/p>

From the fort's ramparts, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views over the town and the Mediterranean coastline. Guellala is the island's potters' village, where craftsmen still work today using age-old techniques passed down through generations. Perched on the highest hill on the island, the Museum of Arts and Traditions offers a fascinating window into the soul of Djerba. Inside, you will discover the island's distinctive architecture through its traditional dwellings known as Menzels, alongside ancient customs and ways of life that remain very much alive in the daily existence of the Djerbians. A quiet, unhurried place \u2014 and all the more precious for it.<\/p>

Fed by a handful of precious freshwater reserves, Mahboubine is the island's one and only oasis \u2014 a verdant secret tucked away amid the otherwise arid landscape. These are in fact private gardens of remarkable lushness, where thousands of date palms, olive trees, pomegranate trees and citrus groves create a canopy of shade and colour that feels almost out of place on this sun-baked island.<\/p>

Beyond this green haven, much of Djerba is semi-desertic, and freshwater is a scarce commodity. Part of the island's supply is brought in from the mainland via pipelines running alongside the ancient Roman Causeway \u2014 a quiet reminder of just how precious every drop of water is on this sun-drenched island.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Stretching along the southern edge of the island, the Roman Causeway is one of Djerba's most remarkable landmarks \u2014 an ancient road that has linked the island to the mainland for centuries, and continues to do so to this day.<\/p>

Further west lies Ajim, a charming fishing port with a character all of its own. Long celebrated for its sponge divers \u2014 a tradition that once defined the livelihoods of entire families \u2014 the village retains a raw, working authenticity rarely found in the more touristic parts of the island. A regular ferry service also operates from Ajim, offering an alternative and scenic crossing to the mainland.<\/p>

Midoun is the second largest town on the island. Closer to the tourist area than the capital, it draws many visitors on Friday mornings for its bustling weekly market \u2014 a lively and colourful affair that offers a genuine glimpse into everyday Djerbian life.<\/p>

In the village of Erriadh stands the Ghriba Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in the world and one of the most important Jewish pilgrimage sites in North Africa.<\/p>

Over the centuries, Djerba has been shaped by countless invasions and influences. Today, it stands as a haven of peace and a living symbol of a rare and precious coexistence. In 2014, Mehdi Ben Cheikh, founder of the Itinerrance gallery in Paris, approached the residents of Erriadh with a bold proposal: to transform their village into an open-air street art museum \u2014 a collective and immersive work of art rooted in its surroundings. Over 250 murals were created by artists from every corner of the globe.<\/p>

The project was revived in 2022 with renewed ambition, as part of the Tounes Wijhetouna programme funded by the European Union, with the support of the Tunisian Ministries of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. What began as a creative experiment has since grown into a lasting initiative and a powerful vehicle for preserving the island's thousand-year-old heritage. Erriadh has been transformed into a true open-air museum, where new murals continue to appear regularly \u2014 keeping the village in a constant state of reinvention.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Taxis are the most practical way to get around the island. Very affordable by European standards, all taxis are fitted with an approved meter and operate at regulated fares. One important detail: taxis are not permitted to leave the island. For journeys to the mainland, louages \u2014 shared intercity taxis \u2014 operate from the Roman Causeway.<\/p>

Car rental is available in the tourist area, in Houmt Souk and Midoun. This is the ideal option for exploring the island at your own pace, as distances are very manageable.<\/p>

HERITAGE: Fort Ghazi Mustapha \u2014 Borj El Kebir Adjacent to the port of Houmt Souk, Fort Ghazi Mustapha\u2014also known as Borj El Kebir\u2014is one of the most historically significant monuments in the entire Mediterranean. Its original construction dates back to the 15th century, during the Hafsid era, to protect the island from maritime invasions. One of the most significant episodes in its history occurred in 1560, when the Spanish, under pressure from Ottoman forces led by the famous corsair Dragut, took refuge there after a crushing defeat. Trapped, they were massacred, marking one of the bloodiest episodes in the island\u2019s history. The assault resulted in between 5,000 and 6,000 deaths among the defenders. After his victory, Dragut ordered the construction of a tower of skulls\u2014the Borj-er-Rous\u2014made from the bones of the defeated soldiers, a macabre symbol intended to intimidate his enemies and assert Ottoman power over the region. This sinister tower was destroyed in 1848 and replaced by a 9-meter-high obelisk that stands today in memory of this tragic episode. From its ramparts, visitors are treated to a breathtaking view of the city and the Mediterranean coastline. A must-see destination, blending history, legend, and a touch of the macabre. GUELLALA Guellala and the Mahboubine Oasis Guellala is a village of potters who, to this day, still work using traditional methods. The Museum of Arts and Traditions is perched on the island\u2019s highest hill. There, you\u2019ll discover Djerba\u2019s typical architecture, including its \u201cMenzels\u201d (traditional dwellings), as well as ancestral customs that remain deeply rooted in the lives of the people of Djerba. Fed by a few precious freshwater reserves, Mahboubine is the island\u2019s one and only oasis\u2014a lush green secret nestled in the heart of an otherwise arid landscape. These are, in fact, remarkably lush private gardens, where thousands of date palms, olive trees, pomegranate trees, and citrus trees form a haven of greenery and coolness that seems almost out of place on this sun-drenched island. Beyond this green haven, much of Djerba is semi-desert, and fresh water is a scarce commodity there. Part of the island\u2019s water supply is provided by pipelines carrying water from the mainland, running alongside the Roman Road\u2014a subtle reminder of the inestimable value of every drop of water on this sun-drenched island. ROMAN ROAD The Roman Road, Ajim, Midoun, Erriadh Running along the island\u2019s southern coast, the Roman Road is one of Djerba\u2019s most remarkable sites\u2014an ancient route that has connected the island to the mainland for centuries and continues to do so today. Further west lies Ajim, a charming fishing port with a strong sense of character. Long famous for its sponge divers\u2014a tradition that once supported entire families\u2014the village has retained a raw, down-to-earth authenticity rarely found in the island\u2019s more touristy areas. A regular ferry service also operates from Ajim, offering an alternative and picturesque crossing to the mainland.
