Traditional Moorish caf\u00e9s line the shaded squares where old men while away the hours over dominoes, in that slow, dreamy atmosphere so wonderfully, unmistakably Djerbian.<\/p>

Standing directly beside the port of Houmt Souk, Fort Ghazi Mustapha \u2014 also known as Borj El Kebir, meaning the Great Fort \u2014 is one of the most historically charged monuments in the entire Mediterranean. Its origins date back to the 15th century, when it was built under the Hafsid dynasty to defend the island against seaborne invasions.<\/p>

One of the most dramatic chapters in its history unfolded in 1560, when Spanish forces, overwhelmed by the Ottoman army led by the feared corsair Dragut, sought refuge within its walls after a crushing defeat at sea. Trapped and outmatched, they were slaughtered in what remains one of the bloodiest episodes in the island's history \u2014 between 5,000 and 6,000 defenders lost their lives in the assault.<\/p>

In the wake of his victory, Dragut ordered the construction of a tower of skulls \u2014 the Borj er-Rous \u2014 built from the bones of the fallen soldiers. A macabre symbol of power, it was designed to strike fear into enemies and assert Ottoman dominance over the region. This grim monument stood until 1848, when it was torn down and replaced by a 9-metre obelisk that stands to this day in memory of that tragic episode.<\/p>

From the fort's ramparts, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views over the town and the Mediterranean coastline. Fed by a handful of precious freshwater reserves, Mahboubine is the island's one and only oasis \u2014 a verdant secret tucked away amid the otherwise arid landscape. These are in fact private gardens of remarkable lushness, where thousands of date palms, olive trees, pomegranate trees and citrus groves create a canopy of shade and colour that feels almost out of place on this sun-baked island.<\/p>

Beyond this green haven, much of Djerba is semi-desertic, and freshwater is a scarce commodity. Part of the island's supply is brought in from the mainland via pipelines running alongside the ancient Roman Causeway \u2014 a quiet reminder of just how precious every drop of water is on this sun-drenched island.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Stretching along the southern edge of the island, the Roman Causeway is one of Djerba's most remarkable landmarks \u2014 an ancient road that has linked the island to the mainland for centuries, and continues to do so to this day.<\/p>

Further west lies Ajim, a charming fishing port with a character all of its own. Long celebrated for its sponge divers \u2014 a tradition that once defined the livelihoods of entire families \u2014 the village retains a raw, working authenticity rarely found in the more touristic parts of the island. A regular ferry service also operates from Ajim, offering an alternative and scenic crossing to the mainland.<\/p>

Midoun is the second largest town on the island. Closer to the tourist area than the capital, it draws many visitors on Friday mornings for its bustling weekly market \u2014 a lively and colourful affair that offers a genuine glimpse into everyday Djerbian life.<\/p>

In the village of Erriadh stands the Ghriba Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in the world and one of the most important Jewish pilgrimage sites in North Africa.<\/p>

Over the centuries, Djerba has been shaped by countless invasions and influences. Today, it stands as a haven of peace and a living symbol of a rare and precious coexistence. In 2014, Mehdi Ben Cheikh, founder of the Itinerrance gallery in Paris, approached the residents of Erriadh with a bold proposal: to transform their village into an open-air street art museum \u2014 a collective and immersive work of art rooted in its surroundings. Over 250 murals were created by artists from every corner of the globe.<\/p>

The project was revived in 2022 with renewed ambition, as part of the Tounes Wijhetouna programme funded by the European Union, with the support of the Tunisian Ministries of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. What began as a creative experiment has since grown into a lasting initiative and a powerful vehicle for preserving the island's thousand-year-old heritage. Erriadh has been transformed into a true open-air museum, where new murals continue to appear regularly \u2014 keeping the village in a constant state of reinvention.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Taxis are the most practical way to get around the island. Very affordable by European standards, all taxis are fitted with an approved meter and operate at regulated fares. One important detail: taxis are not permitted to leave the island. For journeys to the mainland, louages \u2014 shared intercity taxis \u2014 operate from the Roman Causeway.<\/p>

Car rental is available in the tourist area, in Houmt Souk and Midoun. This is the ideal option for exploring the island at your own pace, as distances are very manageable.<\/p>

PATRIMOINE Le Fort Ghazi Mustapha \u2014 Borj El Kebir Jouxtant le port de Houmt Souk, le fort Ghazi Mustapha \u2014 \u00e9galement appel\u00e9 Borj El Kebir \u2014 est l’un des monuments les plus charg\u00e9s d’histoire de toute la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e. Sa construction initiale remonte au XVe si\u00e8cle, \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque des Hafsides, pour prot\u00e9ger l’\u00eele contre les invasions maritimes. L’un des \u00e9pisodes les plus marquants de son histoire remonte \u00e0 1560, lorsque les Espagnols, sous la pression des forces ottomanes men\u00e9es par le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre corsaire Dragut, s’y r\u00e9fugi\u00e8rent apr\u00e8s une d\u00e9faite cuisante. Pris au pi\u00e8ge, ils furent massacr\u00e9s, marquant l’un des \u00e9pisodes les plus sanglants de l’histoire de l’\u00eele. L’assaut fit entre 5 000 et 6 000 morts du c\u00f4t\u00e9 des d\u00e9fenseurs. Apr\u00e8s sa victoire, Dragut ordonna la construction d’une tour des cr\u00e2nes \u2014 le Borj-er-Rous \u2014 faite avec les ossements des soldats vaincus, symbole macabre destin\u00e9 \u00e0 intimider ses ennemis et affirmer la puissance ottomane sur la r\u00e9gion. Cette sinistre tour fut d\u00e9truite en 1848, remplac\u00e9e par un ob\u00e9lisque de 9 m\u00e8tres de haut qui se dresse aujourd’hui en m\u00e9moire de cet \u00e9pisode tragique. CHAUSS\u00c9E ROMAINE La Chauss\u00e9e Romaine, Ajim, Midoun, Erriadh Longeant le bord sud de l’\u00eele, la Chauss\u00e9e Romaine est l’un des sites les plus remarquables de Djerba \u2014 une voie antique qui relie l’\u00eele au continent depuis des si\u00e8cles, et qui continue de le faire aujourd’hui.
