The Eso Wreck
Around 6 miles off Ras Turgueness, the wreck of the Eso — nicknamed Khorda by the locals — is a relatively recent discovery, only located in 2014, and already one of the most fascinating dive sites off Djerba. This Italian minelayer departed Tripoli on 18 January 1943, escorting the cargo vessel SS Edda towards Trapani. The following day, after the British submarine HMS Unbroken attacked the Edda, the Eso gave chase alone — before being struck by an aerial attack and sinking in her turn, coming to rest at 20 metres depth.
Since then, nature has reclaimed what history left behind. Groupers, dentex, rays, sea turtles, octopuses, brown meagre and parrotfish have colonised the wreck and made it their sanctuary. An intimate and deeply moving dive, where history can be read in every corner of the hull.
